Flashcards in 02 C-spine Treatments Deck (17):
1

5 classifications of treatment

1. Mobility/manual therapy
2. Specific exercise
3. Conditioning/exercise tolerance (think of as a stabilization category)
4. Pain control
5. Headache

2

classifications of trx: manual therapy
clinical exam

- recent onset of s/s
- no radicular s/s
- normal neuro exam
- decreased ROM
- hypomobility

3

classifications of trx: manual therapy
treatment

- mobs
- manipulation
- suboccipital release

4

classifications of trx: specific exercise
clinical exam

- positive radicular s/s
- may have abnormal neuro exam
- positive repeated motion tests

5

classifications of trx: specific exercise
treatment

- repeated motions
- cervical traction (mechanical or manual)

6

classifications of trx: conditioning/exercise tolerance
clinical exam

- lower pain
- chronic s/s
- normal neuro exam
- negative repeated motion tests
- positive CCFT/endurance

7

classifications of trx: conditioning/exercise tolerance
treatment

- deep neck flexor strengthening
- aerobic conditioning

8

classifications of trx: pain control
clinical exam

- trauma (i.e. MVA)
- higher pain levels
- recent onset
- referred s/s possible, but not radicular
- normal neuro exam

9

classifications of trx: pain control
treatment

- gentle AROM
- TENS/IFC, maybe heat/ice

10

classifications of trx: headache
clinical exam

- unilateral HA and neck pain
- HA triggered by neck pain
- positive cervical flexion rotation test

11

classifications of trx: headache
treatment

- mobilization
- manipulation
- deep neck flexor strengthening
- suboccipital release

12

manual therapy
comparable sign

if there's a particular segment that reproduces their symptoms, that's how you know you're where you need to be for treatment

13

manual therapy
provocation

if you don't get a comparable sign, but you find a hypomobile segment

14

What should you always ask when you're doing c-spine mobs?

Does it hurt?
Does it replicate the pain?

15

Main techniques for C-spine mobs

1. CPA (central PA mob) = directly on spinous process
2. UPA (unilateral PA mob) = on articular pillar within c-spine
3. transverse pressure

16

transverse pressure
- finger position and how to mobilize

- directly on side of spinous process
- mobilize toward direction of pain

17

When would you use transverse pressure mob? (TP)

for patients that can't tolerate UPA - more gentle
