Qualitative data
Expresssed in words / is descriptive data
May take the form a written description of thoughts , feeling and opinions of ppts
Such as notes recoded with an interview , a diary entry or answers from open questions in a questionnaire
Qualitative data strength
Rich detail and depth participants develop thoughts feelings on a given subject
Greater understanding of behaviour bieng studied
Whereas quantative data lacks depth as data is numerical
Qualitative limitation
Harder to analyse , as it’s difficult to summarise statistically to establish patterns and trends
Opens data up to potential interpretations as analysis is based upon own subjective interpretation
Whereas quantitive data can be analysed satistically to provide trends and pattern which make it easier to make objective conclusions about behaviour
Primary data
Primary data gathered directly first hand from ppts themselves
Specific to the aim of the study
Primary data strength
Collected first hand specifically for the aim
Allows researchers to specifically target information
Whereas secondary may not directly meet need of research suggesting it may be less useful
Primary data limitation
Primary data conducted by researcher themesves
Involves time and effort to obtain data as well as analyse the findings
Whereas secondary is easily accessed requires minimmal effort
Reducing time / cost taken to complete research
Secondary research
Has previously been collected by a third party
Not specifically for the aim of the study and then used by the researcher
Secondary research
Has previously been collected by a third party
Not specifically for the aim of the study and then used by the researcher
Secondary research strength
Easily accessed and requires minimal effort to obtain
Researcher may find information they want that already exists
Therefore there is not need to collect primary data which requires time and effort to obtain and analyse findings
Secondary research limitation
May be poor quality or have innacurcies
Could be outdated or incomplete might not meet direct needs of researchers
Whereas primary collected first hand specifically for the aim of the research increasing overall internal validity
Meta analysis
Form of research method that uses secondary data
Gains data from large number of studies
Which have investigated same research questions and methods of research
Combines this informations from all studies to make conclusions about behaviour
Meta analysis strength
Gather data from large number of studies
Allowed us to veiw more data with confidence
Increases generalisability of findings across much larger populations
Meta analysis limitation
Prone to publication bias as research may not select all relevant studies
Choosing to leave out studies with negative or non significant result
Thus data will be biased , only represents some relevant data and incorrect conclusions are drawn
