Q

What is the difference between data and information? Express your answer in terms of the role of the computer.

Q

Output does not necessarily go directly to a user, e.g. a hardcopy output from a printer. Give two other destinations for output, or ways in which output can be used.

A

Output can be sent directly to storage.
Output can be communicated directly to other computers.
Output can be used as input for other programs and computer systems. Output can be used to control equipment or devices.

Q

Give two ways in which sensitive data can be protected, besides physically restricting access to the data.

A

Encryption – Changes data into a secret code so only authorised users can read it. Strong Passwords & Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) – Uses strong passwords and extra steps (like a phone code) to block unauthorised access.

Q

With all the new types of input devices that have been developed, why is the
keyboard still the most commonly used input device?

A

Most of the data we need to enter is text – and the keyboard is still the fastest way to enter text, especially for someone who can type quickly and accurately. It is also relatively easy to learn and use.

Q

Would you classify a touch screen as an input device or as an output device? Motivate your answer.

A

It is both. Input, as it allows the user to provide input by touching the screen, and output, as it displays output as a normal computer screen does.

Q

Give an example of a situation where a keyboard would be a better choice of input device to use as opposed to a touch screen.

A

Any situation where a lot of text needs to be input, e.g. typing a thesis; any situation where it is important to see the whole of the screen display area (for a purpose other than data input).

Q

Many novice computer users battle to remember when to use a left-click and when to use a right-click with a mouse, as well as when to double-click.
Give some advice by referring to suitable examples.

A

A left-click is used to select an object such as an image in a document or to reposition the cursor.
A right-click is normally used to bring up a set of options related to the current task – a pop- up menu.
Double-clicking is normally done to open a document or a folder, or to run a program.

Q

Give the main advantage and the main disadvantage of using a wireless keyboard or mouse as opposed to a wired one.

A

A wireless keyboard/mouse clears clutter from the desk or work surface.
A wireless keyboard/mouse can be inconvenient as you can’t use the device if the batteries are flat and you don’t have spare batteries.

Q

Give three reasons why a touch screen device is often used in restaurants.

A

Quicker/easier and more accurate to input data, especially with a fixed selection of options. Saves space as it serves the function of both a mouse and a keyboard.
It is easy and intuitive to use and requires very little training.
