Flashcards in 1 - Derm - Introduction + Examination - Terminology Deck (11):
1

eruption =
lesion=
pruritis=
erythematous=

=rash
=any single small area of skin disease
=sensation of itching
=redness

2

difference between macule and a patch

BOTH flat nonpalpable change in skin colour
Macule - <0.5 cm diameter (freckle=pigmented macule)
Patch - >0.5

3

elevation due to fluid in a cavity - 3 terms and meanings

vesicle - fluid below epidermis <0.5cm diameter
bulla - fluid below epidermis >0.5cm
pustule - visible collection of pus in subcutis

4

elevation due to solid masses - papule vs plaque vs nodule

papule - raised area <0.5cm
nodule - raised mass or lump >0.5cm
plaque - raised area >2cm - flat topped

5

elevation due to solid masses - wheal vs callus

wheal - dermal oedema
callus - hyperplastic epidermis, often found in soles/palms/other places friction+use

6

Loss of skin
-erosion vs ulcer

erosion - partial epidermal loss, heals without scarring
ulcer - full thickness skin loss, heals with scarring

7

Loss of skin
-fissure vs atrophy

fissure - linear crack
atrophy - thinning of epidermis

8

Secondary lesions
scale vs crust (scab)

scale - small thin piece of horny epithelium - like a fish
crust/scab - dried exudate is a crust of blood/plasma

9

Secondary lesions
excoriation , lichenification

exc - scratch marks
lichenification - thickened epidermis with exaggerated skin markings - bark like - usually from repeated scratching

10

Vascular lesions
telangiectasia, spider naevus, purpura

tel - easily visible superficial blood vessels
spider naevus - single telangiectasic artieriole in skin
purpura - rash cuased by blood in skin - often multiple petechiae

11

Vascular lesions - petechia, ecchymosis, erythema

pet - microhaemmorhage 1-2mm diameter
ecchymosis - bruise - technically a form of purpura
erythema - local vasodilatation giving reddening of skin
