10.4 INSIDE IONIC COMPOUNDS Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
Oppositely charged ions are attracted to each other by strong electrostatic force
2
Q
What is ionic bonding formed between?
A
Metal atom and non-metal atom
3
Q
What does ionic bonding produce?
A
Ionic compound
4
Q
Why is chlorine ion a negative ion?
A
- Protons have positive charge and electrons have negative charge
- Chlorine ion have more electron than proton
5
Q
What is giant ionic structure?
A
Ionic bonding hold all the positive and negative ions in a 3D pattern
6
Q
What are the physical properties of ionic compounds?
A
- High melting and boiling point
- Contains large numbers of ions, a lot of energy needed to overcome this ionic bonding - Brittle
- When you hit or drop an ionic crystal, the layers of ions shift.
- This can cause ions with the same charge to line up next to each other (like positive next to positive).
- Like charges repel, so the crystal shatters or breaks easily.
