10.8 Chaging Population Characteristics Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What is selection pressures
A
Factors that affect an organisms chance of survival or reproduction success
2
Q
What is a result of natural selection
A
The adaptation will become more common in the population
Organisms that are poorly adapted are less likely to survive and reproduce so the characteristics are not passed to the next generation
3
Q
Natural selection follows a number of steps what are they
A
- Organisms within a species show variation in their characteristics
- Organisms whose characteristics are best adapted to a selection pressure have increased chance of survival and reproducing less adapted die or fail to reproduce
- Successful organisms pass the allele encoding advantageous characteristic o their offspring
- Process repeated for every characteristic. Frequency of the allele that codes for this particular characteristic increases in the population gene pool
- Over long period of time this process can lead to evolution of new species
