Define covalent bond
A shared pair of electrons between 2 atoms
How are covalent bonds broken?
Through either homolytic/heterolytic fission
Define homolytic fission
The breaking of a covalent bond where one of the bonded electrons goes to each atom, forming 2 radicals
What is a radical?
An atom with an unpaired electron
Define heterolytic fission
The breaking of a covalent bond where one of the bonded atoms takes both of the electrons from the bond, forming a cation and an anion
