15.7 Exhaust Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is the main task of the exhaust system on a turboprop engine?
Safely guides exhaust gases overboard
What is the main task of the exhaust system on a jet engine?
To accelerate the airflow from the turbine to generate thrust
What is the main task of the exhaust system on an APU?
To guide exhaust gases overboard
How does the APU exhaust system decrease noise? Located where?
Using mufflers in the exhaust duct
What are the 3 exhaust section components?
Exhaust cone, tailpipe and exhaust nozzle
What does the exhaust cone do?
Collects exhaust gases from the turbine section and converts them into a solid flow of gas
What happens to velocity and pressure in an exhaust cone?
Velocity decreases and pressure increases
Is a tailpipe flexible? Why?
Semi flexible to avoid stress and warping
What are the 2 functions of radial struts?
Support the inner cone in the exhaust duct and straighten swirling exhaust gases
What degree do exhaust gases leave the turbine at?
45 degrees
What are the 2 most common methods of protecting the fuselage structure?
Insulation blankets and shrouds
What do insulation blankets do?
Reduce heat loss from exhaust system
What are the 2 types of exhaust nozzle designs?
Convergent design and convergent divergent design
When is a convergent t exhaust nozzle used?
For subsonic gas velocities
When is a convergent divergent exhaust nozzle used?
Supersonic gas velocities
What % of thrust do turboprops produce?
10-15%
What % thrust do turbofans produce?
15-20%
What 2 types of engines can turbofans be? Which one has 2 nozzles (1 for core airflow and 1 for fan airflow)?
Ducted or unducted. Unducted
How can noise level be reduced?
By operating at lower power settings
What 2 noise suppressors are in current use?
Corrugated perimeter type and multi tube type
How do both noise suppressors work?
Break up the main jet exhaust stream into smaller jet streams
Where are acoustic linings installed?
Between the engine and cowl
What do acoustic linings do?
Convert acoustic energy into heat
