- 1678-81 Popish plot → a rumour (by Titus Oates) of a plot to murder JII due to his conversion to catholicism

- 1661-65 Clarendon code
- 1661 Corporation Act - only Anglicans can hold office
- 1662 Act of Uniformity → restored Laudian reforms and set strict condition meaning 1800 ministers were expelled
- 1662 Declaration of Indulgence → suspended the Act of Uniformity
- 1663 Declaration of Indulgence removed - 1688 Declaration of Indulgence gave more freedom of worship to catholics

Fear of Absolutism

- 1670 Treaty of Dover → committed England to war with France against Anglo Dutch and freed CII from dependency on parliament
- 1683 Rye House Plot → a plot to kill JII and CII and replace them with Monmouth. Didn’t succeed and allowed CII to continue the rest of his reign without calling parliament
- 1688 birth of James II’s son → fear of catholicism and absolutism
