What is content analysis
Analysing qualitative data by changing large amounts of qualitative data into Quantative
By identifying meaningful codes than can be counted enabling us to present the data in a graph
How is Content analysis carried out ?
Read or veiw the video or transcript
Identify or create coding categories provide an example of a relevant category
Re read diaries / questionares or repeatedly listen to sections of the recording
Present the quantative data in a graph or timetable
Thematic analysis
Method of analysing qualitative data by identifying emergent themes
Enabling us to present data in qualitative format
R.g interview recording or presentations
How is thematic analysis carried out ?
Watch video or listen to recording to create to create transcript of …
Read and re read transcript (familiarisation)
Identify coding - looking for words that cropped up repeatedly
Combine codes to reduce number of the
Into 3 or 4 themes that are linked
Present data in qualitative format
Analysing qualitative data (s)
Easy to assess reliability of findings and conclusions
Because other researchers can added materials and use coding systems to ensure findings are consistent
Analysing qualatituve data (L)
Researcher bias as context confirms researchers hypothesis is more likely to be identified and recorded
Compared to content that contradicts their aims and expectations
Lowering internal validity of the analysis
