TYPES OF TEXAS DRIVER LICENSES
This is a permit issued for the purpose of allowing a student driver to legally practice when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age and has had at least one year of driving experience who is occupying the seat beside the driver.
- This person cannot be intoxicated, asleep or engaging in any activity that prevents them from observing and responding to actions of the driver.
- The minimum age is 15 with driver education.
- This license is valid until the applicants eighteenth birthday.
- A person may not receive a Texas driver license until they surrenders all other valid driver licenses in their possession issued by other states.
The Instruction Permit

All original licenses, other than an Instructional Permit, issued to persons under 18 years of age will be marked “PROVISIONAL”.
- The license will expire on the applicant’s 18th birthday.
- Licensees under 21 years old will have “Under 21” printed on their license.

The following listed Class A, B, C and M licenses will be issued to persons who are either exempt from or not required to obtain a Commercial Driver License.
Classified Driver Licenses

TYPES OF TEXAS DRIVER LICENSES
This license allows a person to drive:
* any vehicle or combination of vehicles weighing 26001 pounds or more,
* provided the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds;
* including a vehicle included in Class B or Class C,
* except a motorcycle or moped.

- Applicant must be a minimum age of 25,
- or 18-24 with completion of an approved adult driver education 6-hour course,
- or 17 with completion of an approved driver education course including classroom and practical training
- or approval of a minor’s hardship application.
- The fee is $24 for a 6-year license.
- Applicants under the age of 18 are charged $15 for a license to expire on their 18th birthday.
Class A driver license

This license allows a person to drive:
* a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more,
* and any such vehicle towing either a vehicle with a gross weight rating that does not exceed 10,000 pounds,
* or a farm trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating that does not exceed 20,000 pounds.
* A bus with a seating capacity of 24 passengers or more, including the driver; and
* A vehicle included in Class C.

* The minimum ages are 25,
* or 18-24 with completion of a 6-hour adult driver education course,
* or 17 with a completion of an approved driver education course including classroom and practical training
* or approval of a minor’s hardship application.
* The fee is $24 for 6 years.
* If the applicant is under 18 then the fee is $15 for a license to expire on their 18th birthday.
Class B driver license

This license allows a person to drive:
* A single unit vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that is not a Class A or B;
* and A single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26,000 pounds, towing a trailer not to exceed 10,000 gross vehicle weight rating
* or a farm trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating that does not exceed 20,000 pounds.

* The minimum ages are 25,
* or 18-24 with completion of an approved 6-hour adult driver education course,
* or 16 with completion of an approved 32-hour course of driver education including classroom and practical training,
* or 15 with approval of minor’s hardship application.
* The fee is $24 for 6 years.
* Applicants under the age of 18 are charged $15 for a license to expire on their 18th birthday.
Class C driver license

TYPES OF TEXAS DRIVER LICENSES
This license allows a person to drive:
* For motorcycle – minimum ages are 18,
* or 16 with completion of an approved course of driver education (32 hour classroom and the 16-hour Department- approved Basic Motorcycle Operator Training Course)
* For a Moped – minimum age is 15

* Applicant’s who are 15 can only operate a motor driven cycle of 250cc or less.
* Age 15 with Department approval for minor’s hardship license
* Age 15 with completion of an approved course of driver education (32 hour classroom and 16 hour Department- approved Basic Motor cycle course)

* The fee is $24 for 6 years.
* Applicants under the age of 18 are charged $15 for a license to expire on their 18th birth date.
* A motorcycle endorsement added to a current license requires a $15 examination fee.
* An additional fee of $8 will be required when renewing a Class M License.
Class M driver license

A holder of this license may drive all vehicles in the class for which that license is issued, and all lesser classes of vehicles except motorcycles and mopeds.

* vehicles that require an endorsement may not be driven unless the proper endorsement appears on the license.
* Authorization to operate motorcycles must be shown on the Commercial Driver License.
Commercial Driver License (CDL)

allows a person to drive:
* any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more,
* provided the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle or vehicles being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.
* The Minimum ages are 21 (interstate commerce driving)
* or 18 (intrastate driving).
* The fee is $60.00 for 5 years.
Class A Commercial Driver License

allows a person to drive:
* any single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more,
* any one of those vehicles towing a vehicle that does not exceed 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating,
* and any vehicle designed to transport 24 passengers or more, including the driver.
* The minimum age is 21 (interstate commerce driving)
* or 18 (intrastate driving).
* The fee is $60.00 and is good for 5 years.
Class B Commercial Driver License

TYPES OF TEXAS DRIVER LICENSES
permits a person to drive any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that is not a Class A or B if either vehicle is:
* Designed to transport 16 to 23 passengers, including the driver; or
* Used in the transportation of hazardous materials that require the vehicle to be placarded under 49 C.F.R, Part 172, Subpart F.
* The minimum age is 21(interstate commerce driving)
* or 18 (intrastate driving).
* The fee is $60.00 and is good for 5 years.
