Q

What is produced from photosynthesis and what is it used for?

A

Glucose-Energy and making hormones

Oxygen-Waste product, released into atmosphere

1
Q

What are the 4 things needed for photosynthesis?

A

Light (from sun)
Carbon Dioxide (from air)
Water (from soil)
Chlorophyll (in leaves)

3
Q

What is the equation for photosynthesis?

A

CO2+Water—>Glucose+O2

(Light)

4
Q

What happens to light energy?

A

It is absorbed by chlorophyll.

5
Q

What are the 4 uses of glucose?

A

Converted into insoluble starch.
Used to provide energy through respiration.
Used to produce fat/oil for storage.
Used to produce proteins (nitrates from soil also needed).

6
Q

Why is glucose turned into insoluble starch?

A

Glucose soluble in water, if stored in plant cells it would affect the way water moves in/out of the cells. Lots of glucose stored in cells could destroy water balance in plant.

7
Q

What are the 3 limiting factors of photosynthesis?

A

Temperature, Carbon Dioxide and Light.

8
Q

How can you increase/decrease the rate if photosynthesis?

A

Increase/decrease the limiting factors.

9
Q

What would happen to the rate of photosynthesis if the temperature was very high?

A

It would drop dramatically as the enzymes denature.

10
Q

What is the optimum temperature for photosynthesis?

A

Around 40 degrees Celsius.

11
Q

What are the pros and cons of controlling Carbon Dioxide levels?

A
Pros:
*plants grow larger/faster
Cons:
*expensive
*burns fossil fuels
*need to monitor levels
