1

what are the 2 processes involved in the formation of precipitation

Bergeron effect
Collision process

2

Bergeron effect

- Water vapour evaporates off of a water droplet in a cloud
- deposits on an ice crystals
- droplet shrinks, ice crystal grows

3

Collision process

-occurs after bergeron effect
-in warm cloud
-large particle collide with smaller ones
-particles accumulate until they are large enough to fall as precipitation

4

Collision process terminology:
coalescence
aggregation
accretion

coalescence - liquid to liquid
aggregation - solid to solid
accretion - solid to liquid
Fragmentation - solid or liquid

5

3 factors that explain the intensity of precipitation

-updraft stregnth
-cloud water content
-cloud vertical thickness

6

updraft strength

-assists in growing particles in cloud through collision and fragmentation

7

Cloud water content

- higher temperatures increase potential for water content

8

Cloud vertical thickness

-increased thickness could favour greater intensities
