1
Q

What is the trend in the atomic radius of group 2?

A

The atomic radius increases as you go down group 2 due to the energy levels increasing. There is a bigger distance between the nucleus and the electrons in the highest occupied level.

2
Q

What is the trend in first ionisation energy of group 2?

A

The first ionisation energy decreases as you go down the group. This is because the atoms have more shells and so the furthest electron is further way from the nucleus and experiences more shielding and so takes less energy to remove.

3
Q

Trend in reactivity of group 2 elements?

A

Reactivity increases down the group. As the outer electrons become easier to remove (even though the proton number increases) the outer electrons are further from the attracting nucleus and more shielded.

4
Q

What is the reaction of an acid + a metal?

A

Acid + Metal –> Salt + Hydrogen

5
Q

What is a decrease in oxidation number?

A

A redox reaction

6
Q

What is an increase in oxidation number?

A

An oxidation reaction

7
Q

What is the reaction of a Metal + Oxygen?

A

Metal + Oxygen –> Metal Oxide

8
Q

What is the reaction of a Metal + water?

A

Metal + Water –> Metal Hydroxide

9
Q

What happens due to the solubility of group 2 hydroxides?

A

Solubility of group 2 hydroxides increases down the group. Therefore the (saturated) solutions become more alkaline
