5.1.3: Neuronal Communication Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are neurones responsible for?
Transmitting electrical impulses so the body can respond to changes in its environment.
How many main groups can neurones be categorised into?
Three main groups: sensory neurones, relay neurones, and motor neurones.
What is the function of the cell body in a neurone?
Contains organelles including the nucleus, where proteins and neurotransmitter chemicals are made.
What do dendrons do?
Carry the action potentials to surrounding cells.
What is the axon in a neurone?
A conductive, long fibre that carries the nervous impulse along the motor neurone.
What are Schwann cells?
Cells that wrap around the axon to form the myelin sheath.
What is the myelin sheath?
A lipid layer that does not allow charged ions to pass through.
What are the gaps between the myelin sheath called?
Nodes of Ranvier.
What is saltatory conduction?
The process where the action potential jumps from node to node, allowing faster transmission.
Fill in the blank: Neurones are specialised cells responsible for transmitting _______.
[electrical impulses]
True or False: Myelinated neurones do not have Schwann cells.
False
