5th - Science Unit 5 Lesson 4 Part 1 Flashcards
(33 cards)
An ecosystem where water is near the surface of the soil much of the time.
Wetland
One of Earth’s major land ecosystems, each with its own kind of climate, soil, plants, and animals.
Biome
The boundary where a freshwater ecosystem meets a saltwater ecosystem.
Estuary
What are all environments?
An ecosystem
What is all the living and nonliving things interacting in the environment?
Ecosystem
Is a set of habitats or ecosystem all grouped together into a kind of “super-ecosystem”.
Biome
How do you characterize Land Ecosystems?
By the animals that live there, plants that grow there and soil.
How many Land Ecosystems are there?
Six
Name to major Land Ecosystems.
- Taigas
- Tundras
- Deserts
- Grasslands
- Deciduous Forests
- Rain Forests
Freshwater, saltwater or a mixture are all what?
Water Ecosystems
What are the different types of water ecosystems found on Earth?
Ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands, estuaries, and oceans.
What effects climates in an ecosystem?
Sunlight
What areas receive more direct sunlight?
Areas closer to the equator receive more direct sunlight.
How does receiving more direct sunlight effect the ecosystems near the equator?
They are rich with plants and animals
How does receiving less direct sunlight effect ecosystems?
Fewer organisms live in Earth’s polar regions.
What do tundras, taigas and deserts ecosystems have in common?
- They have harsh climates - may have extremely hot or cold temperatures or very little precipitation.
- These conditions limit the types of plants and animals that can live there.
Where are Tundras ecosystems found?
In far northern regions
What are some characteristics of Tundras?
- Cold winters and short summers
- Cold, dry biome that includes a layer of permafrost
- Support fewer species than most other biomes
- Some areas are covered with ice
A layer of permanently frozen soil?
Permafrost
What are the characteristics of permafrost?
- Prevents trees and large plants from developing deep roots.
- Lichens, mosses, grasses, flowers and low shrubs with shallow root systems can grow above it.
Where are Taigas ecosystems found?
South of the northern tundras
What is a Cool forest of cone-bearing evergreen trees?
Taigas
How are the seasons in the Taigas?
Winters are cold and summers are warm, wet and humid.
What do all deserts have in common?
All are dry
