7.3 Reflection and images Flashcards
What is reflection? Name its two types.
Reflection is the phenomena where light incident on a surface bounces back into the medium it was travelling it. Based on the nature of the surface, reflection can be of two types.
What does incident mean?
Incident means when light shines on an object.
When light is incident on a surface, reflection, absorption and transmission will always take place.
What is irregular reflection?
Irregular reflection, also known as diffused reflection occurs when light is incident on a rough surface. This does not produce an image and as the surface is rough, it is not geometrically accurate. Irregular reflection illuminates non-luminous bodies.
What is regular reflection?
Regular reflection takes place when light is incident on a smooth surface. This produces an image and as the surface is smooth, the image it geometrically accurate.
What are the properties of an image formed in a plane mirror?
Properties of image in a plane mirror -
1. Image is formed behind the mirror
2. Object distance is equal to image distance
3. The image is upright in nature and is a virtual image
4. The image in the mirror is laterally inverted.
What are virtual images? What are real images?
Virtual images are images that u need to look through an object to see. Real images are images which you do not need to look through an object to see.
What does laterally inverted mean?
The phenomena of laterally inverted is lateral inversion. During this phenomena, when you put up your left hand, it appears to be the opposite.
