8-3-2 Rock Cycle Flashcards
(27 cards)
What are three types of rocks?
Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic.
What is the rock cycle?
Continuous changing of rocks from one kind to another.
What are the two kinds of Igneous rocks?
Intrusive and Extrusive
What is a intrusive igneous rock?
It’s magma that hardens
What is an extrusive igneous rock?
Lava that hardens
How do you classify the extraneous igneous rocks?
Textures and composition
How do you know the type of igneous rock? ( intrusive & extrusive )
How fast or slow the lava/magma cools
Describe intrusive igneous rock.
Cool slowly, large crystals, rough
Describe extraneous igneous rock.
Cools rapidly, small crystals, smooth
What are the kinds of extrusive rocks?
Obsidian and basalt
What rock is smooth, extrusive, has microscopic crystals, and has a glassy texture?
Obsidian rock
What rock is extrusive, and has small crystals?
Basalt
What is an example of an intrusive rock?
Granite
Describe granite.
Intrusive and has large crystals, near volcanoes.
When are sedimentary rocks formed?
When layers of sediment harden.
What affects sedimentary rock?
Pressure and weight of the sediment.
Where do sedimentary rocks form?
Where rivers meet oceans
What are the kinds of sedimentary rock?
Shale, sandstone, conglomerate and limestone
What is shale made of?
Mud and clay
What is sandstone made of?
Sand
What is conglomerate made of?
Sand, pebble and rocks
What is limestone made of?
Shells of dead animals
What is a metamorphic rock?
Rocks changed due to high heat and great pressure. Formed deep in the earth.
What are the kinds of metamorphic rock?
Quartzile, marble and slate
