1
Q

Scientific method

A

analytical process that seeks to answer questions about our world; involves posing a specific question and then searching for objective (unbiased) answers to the question

2
Q

Observation

A

1st step in searching for an objective answer to a question

3
Q

Hypothesis

A

statement that seeks to explain the observation

4
Q

Experiment

A

hypothesis is tested during this, during which the conditions that produced the observation are repeated in an environment that can be carefully controlled and monitored

5
Q

Control

A

set of conditions that duplicates the observation minus the variable; provides a standard to which the experimental group can be compared in order to examine the effect of the variable

6
Q

Conclusion

A

accepting or rejecting the hypothesis

7
Q

Metric system

A

universal tool of measurement and analysis

8
Q

Scientific notation

A

abbreviation of a very large or very small number using a number x 10^n

9
Q

Meter (m)

A

metric unit for length/distance

10
Q

Liter (L)

A

metric unit for volume

11
Q

Mass

A

amount of matter of an object

12
Q

Gram (g)

A

metric unit of mass

13
Q

Degrees Celsius

A

metric unit of temperature

14
Q

Fahrenheit formula

A

F = 9/5C +32

15
Q

Celsius formula

A

C = 5 (F - 32)/9

16
Q

Blunt probe

A

rigid 5-inch steel instrument with a blunt, usually bent tip; useful for tearing through connective tissue, tearing muscles apart, and separating fragile structures from their attachments

17
Q

Scissors

A

usually 4-6 inches long with the end of 1 blade pointed and the other rounded; used to cut through skin, cut muscles through their center (called bisect), and make other large, clean cuts through major structures

18
Q

Scalpel

A

usually 5 inches with replaceable blades; used to gently scrape away connective tissue and fat, cut through tough fibrous tissues, and make small incisions; use sparingly (can cause irreparable damage to the specimen)

19
Q

Needle probe

A

a 3-inch needle usually attached to a wooden handle; used as a pointer or to attach the specimen to the dissecting tray

20
Q

Forceps

A

about 5 inches long with handles transversely ridged to prevent fingers from slipping; the ends should be blunt and rounded and the gripping surfaces grooved; used to grasp small objects and to remove/pull away connective tissue

21
Q

Protective gear

A

preservative can be irritating to skin and damage clothes, so protective gloves and lab coat/apron should be worn while dissecting; eye protection recommended
