A&P/Section2:H.W. Vocab Flashcards
Catalyst
1 : a substance that enables a chemical reaction to proceed at a usually faster rate or under different conditions (as at a lower temperature) than otherwise possible
Bond
c : an attractive force that holds together the atoms, ions, or groups of atoms in a molecule or crystal
Cohesion
3 : molecular attraction by which the particles of a body are united throughout the mass
Element
e : any of the fundamental substances that consist of atoms of only one kind and that singly or in combination constitute all matter
Equilibrium
a state of adjustment between opposing or divergent influences or elements
Fluid
1 a : having particles that easily move and change their relative position without a separation of the mass and that easily yield to pressure : capable of flowing
Ligand
: a group, ion, or molecule coordinated to a central atom or molecule in a complex
Mass
1 a : a quantity or aggregate of matter usually of considerable size
Mixture
a : a portion of matter consisting of two or more components in varying proportions that retain their own properties
Particle
3 : any of the basic units of matter and energy (as a molecule, atom, proton, electron, or photon)
Periodic
1 a : occurring or recurring at regular intervals
Precursor
a substance, cell, or cellular component from which another substance, cell, or cellular component is formed
Rate
3 a : a fixed ratio between two things 4 a : a quantity, amount, or degree of something measured per unit of something else
Reversible
: capable of being reversed or of reversing: as
a : capable of going through a series of actions (as changes) either backward or forward
Saturate
2 : to treat, furnish, or charge with something to the point where no more can be absorbed, dissolved, or retained
