A&P Theory CH7 Flashcards
Joints According to Structure and Function
Articulation
Where 2 bones meet (joints)
Synarthrosis
No movement
Amphiarthrosis
some/partial movement
Diarthrosis
Free Movement
Syndesmosis
A type of joint where two adjacent bones (tibia + fibula) are joined by a membrane or ligament
Synarthrosis (No Movement)
Fibrous
Sutures
Fibrous connection plus interlocked surfaces
Example:
Between the bones of the skull
Synarthrosis (No Movement)
Fibrous
Gomphosis
Fibrous connections plus insertion in the bony socket (alveolus)
Example:
Between the teeth and bony sockets in the maxillae and mandible
Synarthrosis (No Movement)
Cartilaginous
Synchondrosis
The interposition of cartilage bridge or plate
Example:
Between the first pair of ribs and sternum
Amphiarthrosis
(Little Movement)
Fibrous
Syndesmosis
Ligamentous connection
Examples:
Between the tibia and fibula
Amphiarthrosis
(Little Movement)
Cartilaginous
Symphysis
Connection by a fibrocartilage pad
Example:
Between the two pubic bones
Diarthrosis
(Free Movement)
Synovial
Complex joint bounded by the joint capsule and containing synovial fluid
Example:
The knee, between the femur and tibia
Cartilaginous
Two bones joined by a piece of cartilage between them
Fibrous
Joined by a connective fibrous sheath of some kind, no joint cavity.
Sutures
Fibers between the bones hold skull sutures.
Gomphosis
Roots of teeth into the bones anchored by periodontal ligament.
