1

What is abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)?

A localised dilatation of the aorta beyond its normal diameter

2

What is the law of Laplace?

tension = [pressure x radius] / wall thickness

3

What are some of the risk factors for developing AAA?

Male
Family history
Age
Smoking
PVD
Cardiac disease
Cerebrovascular disease
Hypertension
Hypercholesterolaemia
Diabetes

4

What investigations should be done if aortic aneurysm suspected?

Ultrasound
CT

5

Why is use of ultrasound for investigation of AAA limited?

Only tells if AAA is present - does not give any indication of diameter

6

How does Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) fix an aneurysm?

It excludes the dilated part of the aorta beyond the normal diameter from the normal blood flow by putting a metal tube in the path of the normal diameter

7

How is EVAR done?

It is inserted via a peripheral artery and is Xray guided

8

Which patients is the AAA screening program targeted at?

Men aged >65
