Airway Management Flashcards
(50 cards)
Diffusion
Process in which molecules move from an area higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
How long to suction adults, children, and infants?
Adults 15 seconds
Children 10 seconds
Infants 5 seconds
How much vacuum should suctioning equipment be generating?
300 mm Hg
Two principles purpose of oropharyngeal (oral) airway
- To keep tongue from blocking airway
2. To make it easier to suction the oropharynx.
What is a (OPA) oropharyngeal (oral) airway?
Plastic tool used to move patients tongue from blocking their way. Used only on unconscious patients
What is a (NPA) nasopharyngeal (nasal) airway?
A rubber tube inserted into the patient’s nasal cavity to open an airway
What’s the biggest rule regarding NPAs?
Do not use on patients who have sustained severe trauma to the head or face
What is the recovery position?
The patient is rolled over onto his or her left or right side
What is the therapeutic level of pressure regarding regulators
40 to 70 psi
Does oxygen burn or explode?
Neither. However it does support combustion
This is the preferred way of giving oxygen in a pre-hospital setting for patients who are breathing adequately but I suspected of showing signs of hypoxia.
Nonrebreathing mask
What is crucial to provide proper functioning of a nonrebreathing mask?
A good seal
What delivers oxygen through two small tube like prongs that fit into the patient’s nostrils?
Nasal cannula
What is used to provide comfort while using a nasal cannula?
Humidification, due to the cannula causing dryness or irritation to the mucous membrane lining of the nose
Which device is better to give high flow oxygen through if your expect hypoxia?
Nonrebreather mask
When will brain tissue begin to die without oxygen?
4 to 6 minutes
What is the upper airways major functions?
To warm filter and humidify the air as it enters the body through the nose and mouth
Where is the pharynx located?
The throat, that extends from the nose and mouth to the level of the esophagus and trachea
The nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx are all parts of the
Pharynx
What’s the main purpose of the nasopharynx?
Helps keep contaminants such as dust and other small particles out of the respiratory track. It also warms and humidifiers the air is enters the body
What is the primary function of the oropharynx?
To prevent food and liquid from entering the larynx during swallowing. When swallowing occurs the larynx is elevated and epiglottis falls over the glottis to prevent aspiration
What marks the point where the upper airway ends in the lower airway begins?
The larynx
What is the function of the lower airway?
To deliver oxygen to the Alveoli.
What are bronchioles?
Thin hollow tubes made it smooth muscle in the lungs
