Q

Like Terms:

A

Terms with the same variable part.

Examples: 3x, 2x This applies ONLY to addition and subtraction.

1
Q

Terms:

A

A combination of numbers and variables with multiplication.

Examples: 2x, 5xy, -2, 1

2
Q

CoEfficient:

A

Number in front of a variable

3
Q

Exponents:

A

Tell us how many times we are multiplying something by itself.

4
Q

Distributive property:

A

A term multiplied by a sum or difference in parenthesis.

5
Q

Simplify:

A

Do anything you can do without force.

6
Q

Equal signs:

A

If there is not an equal sign in an expression…DO NOT put one in!!!!!!

7
Q

Difference between equation and expression:

A

Expression has no relation symbol or equal sign. Can only be simplified. An expression is like a phrase or sentence fragment.

I. E. x-7x- 8 is an expression
X-7x-8 =245 is an equation.

8
Q

Subtraction means:

A

Add the opposite (if there is a minus, change to a plus)

I. E. 9-3=9+-3

9
Q

Parenthesis with no number in front of it:

A

Place number 1 in front of it and then multiply (most advantageous with algebraic expressions).

10
Q

If writing in plain pencil:

A

Underline first term with one line, second term with two lines and so on….

11
Q

Negative multiplied by negative:

A

Always a positive!!!!

12
Q

Polynomial:

A

Many terms

13
Q

Distributive with two sets of parenthesis:

A

Must distribute all numbers in each set.

14
Q

F.O.I.L.

A

First: outer: inner: last

15
Q

When a single parenthesis is squared when it is +/- inside:

A

Write it out!

I. E. (x+5) squared= (x+5)(x+5)

16
Q

Parentheses with no number in front:

A

Means must multiply by 1……

If parentheses has a negative sign on the outside, must multiply by -1.

17
Q

Descending order:

A

Highest to lowest exponent of the variable.

18
Q

When there are negatives AND positives:

A

Think of you bank account!

19
Q

Factor:

A

Going backwards (something times something)

20
Q

When finding GCF:

A

Ignore negative or positive signs. ONLY for finding GCF.

21
Q

If you know one factor:

A

You can always find the other factor by DIVIDING!!!!

22
Q

Mental Math:

A

IS BAD!!!!!!!!!! Write all little steps down…..

23
Q

To Simplify:

A

Perform all multiplication and add and subtract as you can.

Collect like terms

24
Q

Factor goal:

A

To split in two

Something)*(something

25
Q

Binomial:

A

Only two terms.

26
Q

Trinomial:

A

Cannot factor by grouping.

27
Q

Unit 6 question 13:

A

Test question

28
Q

Equilateral Triangle:

A

All sides are equal

29
Q

Lateral:

A

Side

30
Q

Perimeter:

A

Add all sides

31
Q

Area:

A

Width(length)

32
Q

Distance Problems:

A

D=r(t)

33
Q

Factor by Grouping:

A

Group 1st 2 terms together and factor out the GCF then group last 2 terms together and factor out the GCF. Factor out parentheses that are the same….take that out and write down what is left over.

34
Q

Difference of two squares:

A

Has to be a subtraction sign. Two squares have to be perfect squares Meaning whole numbers).
