Q

Learn from my real life mistakes:

A

Ed burns: nervous, talked over Jenn, anxious to say something and make an impression

Ed burns producer: nervous, overly talkative, uncool

House casting director: nervous, lied about headshots, didn’t handle criticism well (ie recording her and being “unprepared actor”)

Neighbor Josh the writer: asked me what I do and I said, “I’m an actor, that whole thing. And I’ve been working with my fiancé, she’s a blogger and an online editor.” I need to find a better way to talk about myself.

I need to stop forcing jokes: ie the illiterate joke in Anthropology. Also, I had a dream that I was introduced to a movie executive. The person introducing me said that I was just talking about wanting to work for said exec, and then I joked that, “I said I would consider it.” The joke didn’t land and the exec was insulted, so I had to tell him I was joking.

All of these instances are learning opportunities. I need to be more cool and collected. Be calm, listen carefully, think before I speak, and do more listening than talking. These people are my peers.

2
Q

Engage in active spontaneous listening

A

Lean in and don’t finish their sentences for them. Don’t plan your sentences ahead of time. Bring your body to every word as it is said to you. Be ready to go where the conversation leads: a state of waiting and readiness.

3
Q

Respect for the other person

A

Give your entire being to the other person without distraction, without judgement, without editorializing, without commentary, and without inauthenticity. That is utter respect.

4
Q

Focus on the lips instead of the eyes.

A

This will help take you out of your hidden agendas, inner monologues, judgements, future-tense thinking and planning. You’re busy doing something and the result is authentic communication.

5
Q

While you are waiting for your name to be called:

A

Adopt the attitude of waiting to see if you want to give the casting director the opportunity of casting you.

6
Q

During the meeting:

A

Adopt the attitude that you don’t want anything for the interviewer. It follows that if you don’t want anything, you don’t have to sell anything.

7
Q

When the meeting starts:

A

As soon as you say hello, tell a truth about what you see or hear in the office.

8
Q

When the initial conversation, which flows from your first truth line, starts to fade:

A

Tell another truth.

9
Q

After the conversation gets rolling:

A

Choose to employ the acting focus, Reflection Listening. Do not use this acting focus if the conversation isn’t rolling along. If you’re telling the truth line gets a conversation started, experiment with Reflection Listening. Also experiment with reflection listening if you find yourself nervous, inauthentic, or bored.

10
Q

Give the conversation an energy boost:

A

By playing Yes! And…

11
Q

When you feel you have made your impact:

A

End the conversation.
