Flashcards in Anatomy & Physiology Deck (22):
1

Epiphysis

Refers to the end of the bone.

2

Endosteum

Is the membrane lining the inside of the bone cavity.

3

Periosteum

Is the membrane lining the outside of the bone surface. (This membrane serves to provide attachments for tendons, blood vessels and osteoblast).

4

Diaphysis

Is the shaft of the bone.

5

Gusatory

Is the sensory receptors responsible for the sense of taste.

6

Olfactory

Relates to smell.

7

Auditory

Relates to hearing.

8

Visual

Relates to seeing.

9

Striated Muscle

Is the skeletal muscle, muscles that can be controlled consciously.

10

Liver

An accessory organ of the digestive system. (an accessory organ is one that complements the main organ of a system).

11

Oxytocin

Is secreted by the neurohypophysis or posterior pituitary gland. (it is not a hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis).

12

Connective

The most common type of tissue that includes bone, cartilage, adipose and hemopoietic tissue. (connective tissue serves to protect, support and bind together other body tissues).

13

Myasthenia Gravis

Is a chronic, progressive neuromuscular disease thought to be caused by an autoimmune disorder, characterized by increasing muscle weakness, belpharoptosis and dysphagia. (means great muscle weakness; patient suffer from rapid loss of muscle function ultimately resulting in death).

14

Dendrites

Neuronal structure that receives and conduct impulses toward the cell body.

15

Axons

Conducts impulses away from the cell body.

16

Synapses

Is the junction between dendrites and synapses.

17

Nodes of Raniver

Is the gaps in the myelin sheath.

18

Proximal Convoluted Tubule

The structure that extends from the Bowman's Capsule.

19

Loop of Henle

Is situated between proximal convoluted tubule and collecting tubule.

20

Glomerulus

Is a tuft of capillaries located within the Bowman's Capsule.

21

Structural Hierarchy of organisms

Atom, cells, tissues, organs, systems and organisms.

22

Uvula

fingerlike projection of the soft palate
