Flashcards in Animal And Plant Cells Deck (13):
1

The nucleus

Controls all the activities of the cell and surrounded by the nuclear membrane. It is the brain of the cell

2

The cytoplasm

A liquid gel in which the organelles are suspended and where most of the chemical reactions needed for life take place

3

Cell membrane

Protects the cells. Controls the passage of substances such as glucose and mineral ions into the cell

4

The mitochondria

Structures in the cytoplasm where aerobic respiration takes place. It releases energy for the cell

5

The ribosomes

Where protein synthesis takes place, making all the protein the cell needs

6

How plant cells make their food

Photosynthesis

7

Cellulose

Strengthens the cell and gives it support

8

Chloroplasts

Found in all the green parts of the plant. They're green because they contain the green substance chlorophyll.

9

Root cells

Don't have chloroplasts because they're underground and don't photosynthesise

10

A permanent vacuole

A space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap. This is important for keeping the cells rigid to support the plant

11

Onion cells

Don't photosynthesise so they don't contain chloroplasts

12

More about nucleus

Contain the genes on the chromosomes, it stores and protects the chromosomes which are made up of DNA molecules

13

Chlorophyll

Absorbs the light so the plant can make food by photosynthesis
