List the three main characteristics of this phylum

Dorsal notochord:
A rod of tough, flexible tissue. Serves as animals primary support

Dorsal tubular nerve cord:
Main part of the animals nervous system

Pharyngeal pouches:
Pouches openings develop in most aquatic chordates. In non Aquatic the pouches never open. These pouches permit water to flow over the gills
