What is the major goal of antenatal care?
To help ensure the birth of a healthy baby while minimizing risk to the mother.
When should antenatal care be initiated?
In the first trimester.
Who provides antenatal care?
Midwives, physicians, family medicine clinicians, obstetrician-gynecologists, and maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) subspecialists.
What is checked during the initial antenatal visit?
Medical/obstetric history, physical examination, and initial testing.
What is the purpose of ultrasound examination in antenatal care?
To estimate gestational age, detect fetal malformations, and identify multiple pregnancies.
What is the minimum number of antenatal visits recommended by WHO?
Eight visits.
What is screened for at 15-24 weeks of gestation?
Neural tube defects, trisomy 21, fetal anomalies, and short cervix.
What is screened for at 24-28 weeks of gestation?
Gestational diabetes and anemia.
What is screened for at 28-36 weeks of gestation?
Sexually transmitted infections and fetal growth restriction.
What is screened for at 36-41 weeks of gestation?
Group B beta-hemolytic streptococcus and preparation for labor and delivery.
