(5 cards)
Azoles
Fluconazole, itraconazole
Inhibit fungal sterol (ergosterol) synthesis
Used for local and less serious systemic mycoses (cryptococcal meningitis, blastomyces, coccidiodies, histoplasma)
Cause testosterone synthesis inhibition, liver dysfunction (P-450 inhibition)
Flucytosine
Inhibit DNA and RNA biosynthesis
Used for systemic fungal infection in combination with amphotericin B
Cause bone marrow suppression
Echinocandins
Caspofungin, micafungin
Inhibit cell wall synthesis
Used for invasive aspergillosis, Candida
Cause GI upset, headaches, hepatotoxicity
Griseofulvin
Interferes w/ microtubule function and disrupts mitosis
Oral treatment for superficial infections
Tertatogenic, carcinogenic
Chloroquine
Blocks detoxification of heme into hemozoin leading to heme accumulation
Treatment of plasmodial species
Cause retinopathy, pruritus
