ANTIPLATELET/ANTICOAGULANT Flashcards
anticoagulant drugs
warfarin, heparin, dabigatran, low-molec-weight heparin
antiplatelet drugs
clopidogrel, ticlopidine, dypyridamole, aspirin
anticoagulant actions
interfere with coagulation cascade & thrombin formation; DVT/PE
antiplatelet actions
targets platelets directly; decrease platelet responsiveness=alter formation of platelet plug; TIA/MI/stroke
warfarin
stops cascade from happening at all, PO, taken for longer amt of time, CHEAP
heparin
binds to antithrombin III, prevents fibrinogen to fibrin; STRONG/CHEAP/FAST ACTING, injected; more targeted, short term
dabigatran
reversibly blocks active site of thrombin; expensive, could be alternative to warfarin
LMWH
similar to heparin but can self inject at home, EXPENSIVE
clopidogrel and ticlopidine
irreversibly inhibit the binding of ADP to platelets (which inhibits the receptors req’d for platelets to bind to stuff);
admin following MI, TIA, stroke
dipyridamole
coronary vasodilation; decreases thromboxane (decrease in platelet stickiness); prophylactic tx of angina pectoris
ASA
inhibits COX-1, reduces prostaglandin and thromboxane; prophylaxis/tx to reduce MI, cerebral ischemia
