Flashcards in Approaches -Origins Deck (11):
1

Define psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind, behaviour and experience.

2

Wundt set up

Set up first ever psychology lab in Germany, 1875

3

Wundt's aim

To systematically study mental processes using a technique called introspection

4

Introspection

Analysing how the mind works by asking people to think carefully about how they do mental tasks.

5

Wundt's contribution to psychology

😀 one of first people to argue for scientific methods to study human thinking

🙁 introspection was found to be unreliable, too subjective, and subject to demand characteristics

6

Emergency of psychology as a science

1920s - more scientific methods
1950s- cognitive psychologists conducting experiments by manipulating certain variables and making inferences

7

Key features of science (4)

Control
Objectivity
Replicability
Empiricism

8

Define empiricism

Knowledge is gained by developing theories and testing the theories by direct observation and data gathering

9

Why do theories need to be falsifiable?

Because we cannot test everybody, there is always a chance that there are exceptions to the theory. We cannot prove the theory is true.

White/Black swan analogy

10

Advantages to scientific approach

- Helps to develop treatments or social policies
- Breaking down complex processes to testable hypothesis enables to understand human behaviour better

11

Disadvantages to scientific approach

- Often do not observe natural behaviours
- Most mental processes are not observable
- Human behaviour may not be predictable
