Arts and crafts movement - What were the main features of the movement

A

function - very important, not just for design. Simplicity. Colour/texture - provide unity and focus as rich materials/bold colours were concentrated in small areas. Smaller products - more appropriate for working class not over the top. Nature - reflection of purity and natural rhythms. Rich became richer = less targeted at the rich. Experimenting with different techniques and materials

Art noveau - What are the main features of the movement

A

links between arts and crafts and modernism. Some utilised the benefit of mass production while other made items with only the finest kevel of craftsmanship. Japanese art influenced many of the designs. Nature - natural forms and curves. Feminine art. Organic shapes and whiplash curve.

it started because of the influence of the arts and crafts movement around 1890, then became re-popular after being forgotten due to classes being broken down

modernists rejected design based in nature. Typically rejected embellishment as it was very focused on the functionality, leading to a clean and simple modern look. Destroyed the human shape with geometric shapes. Successfully created prototypes for mass product

Modernism - Bauhaus - What was the biggest product made in this movement and why was it so important

A

Wassily chair made by Marcel Braver, the use of materials and methods of manufacturing was found very interesting - bent metal. It was a modernist movement. Can be mass produced.

The highest priced product from this movement was the MT49 tea pot by Marianne Brandt - focused on metal work
