Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are the 2 divisions of the ANS?
Parasympathetic and Sympathetic
Is the ANS part of the central NS or peripheral NS?
Peripheral NS
What type of component is the ANS?
In what part of the PNS is it found?
AND
What does this mean in terms of the impulses it sends and responses it triggers?
Visceral efferent component.
Found in motor
Impulses travel away from the CNS and responses are unconscious
What does the ANS control?
The involuntary action of:
- Smooth muscle
- Cardiac muscle
- Various glands
What 3 cranial nerves control the head structures?
CN 3, 7, & 9
What part of the brain is part of the sympathetic nervous system?
The adrenal medulla
What does the parasympathetic nervous system control?
Homeostasis and the ‘rest and digest’ function.
What does the sympathetic nervous system control?
Responses to threat/danger and the ‘fight or flight’ response.
What does the autonomic nervous system NOT control?
Breathing
What muscles is breathing controlled by?
Skeletal muscle
What are the 2 actions of noradrenaline?
- Constriction of smooth muscle in blood vessels (vasoconstriction)
- Brochodilation
What receptor is involved in vasoconstriction?
Alpha receptor
What receptor is involved in bronchodilation?
Beta receptor
What do alpha receptors cause?
The contraction of smooth muscle
What do beta receptors cause?
The relaxation of smooth muscle
