Flashcards in B1: Cells Deck (18):
What does the nucleus do?
It controls the activities of the cell
What does the nucleus contain?
The genes on the chromosomes that carry instructions for making proteins needed to build new cells or organisms
What is a cytoplasm?
Where chemical reactions take place
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls what goes in and out the cell
What are mitochondria?
Where aerobic respiration takes place
What are ribosomes?
Where protein synthesis takes place, making all the protein needed in the cell
What is a vacuole?
Contains cell sap
What do chloroplasts do?
Absorbs light to make food by photosynthesis
What is a cell wall?
The definite boundary or wall that is part of the outer structure in certain cells
What do animal cells contain?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, ribosomes
What do plant cells contain?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondria, ribosomes, chloroplasts, cell wall
What do Eukaryotic cells have?
Cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material in a nucleus
What do Prokaryotic cells have?
Cytoplasm, cell membrane surrounded by a cell wall. The genetic material isn't in a distinct nucleus. It forms a single DNA loop
What is diffusion?
The net movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to low concentration
What is the rate of diffusion affected by?
The difference in concentration, the temperature and the available surface area
What substances move in and out of cells by diffusion?
Dissolved substances such as glucose and urea and gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide
What are plasmids?
One or more small loop of DNA (normally found in Prokaryotic cells)
