Flashcards in B2 Deck (39):
1

Catalyst...

A catalyst is a substance which increases the speed of a reaction, without being changed or used up in reaction.

2

Salivary glands...

Produce amylase enzyme in the saliva.

3

Liver...

Where bile is produced. Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fat.

4

Gall bladder...

Where bile is stored, before its released into the small intestine.

5

Large intestine...

Excess water absorbed from food.

6

Stomach...

It pummels the food with its muscular walls. It produces the protease enzyme, pepsin. Produces hydrochloric acid;
1 to kill bacteria
2 to give the right ph for the protease enzyme to work.

7

Pancreas...

Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes. It releases these into the small intestine.

8

Small intestine...

Produces lipase, protease and amylase enzymes to complete digestion. Where digested food is absorbed out of the digestive system in the blood.

9

Rectum...

Where the faeces are stored before they bid you shit it out through the anus.

10

Lipase...

Breakdown of fats to fatty acids and glycerol or other alcohols.

11

Benedicts food test...

Sugars. Normal blue to green yellow or brick red- depends on how much sugar is in the food.

12

Iodine solution food test...

Starch. From browny orange to black or blue- black.

13

Biurets food test...

Protein. Blue to pink or purple.

14

Sudan 111 test...

Lipids. Top layer goes bright red and the rest clear.

15

Heart...

Top atrium. Bottom ventricle.

16

Artificial Pacemaker...

To control heart beat e.g. if you have an irregular heart beat.

17

Arteries...

Carry blood away from the heart. Branch into capillaries.

18

Capillaries...

These are involved in the exchanged of materials at the tissues.

19

Veins...

Carry blood to the heart.

20

Rate of blood flow calculation...

Rate of blood flow= volume of blood/ number of minutes.

21

Red blood cells...

Carry oxygen.

22

White blood cells...

Defend against infection.

23

Platelets...

Help blood clot.

24

Cardiovascular disease...

A term used to describe of the heart or blood vessels, for example coronary heart disease.

25

Stents...

Keep arteries open. lowers risk of heart attacks.

26

Artificial heart...

Pumps blood around the body.

27

Health...

The state of physical and mental wellbeing.

28

Diseases...

Are often responsible for causing ill health.

29

Communicable diseases...

Spread from person to person between animals and between people. Caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi.

30

Non-communicable disease...

Those that cannot spread between people or between animals and people. They generally last for a long time and get worse slowly. Asthma, cancer and coronary heart disease.

31

Cancer...

Caused by uncontrolled cell growth and division.

32

Epidermal tissue...

Covers the whole plant.

33

Palisade mesophyll tissue...

This is the part of the leaf where most photosynthesis happens.

34

Spongy mesophyll tissue...

This is in the lea, contains big air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out of the cells.

35

Xylem and Phloem...

They transport thing like water, mineral ions and food around the plant.

36

Meristem tissue...

This is found at the growing tips of shoots and roots and is able to differentiate into lots of different types of plant cell, allowing the plant to grow.

37

Phloem tubes...

Transport food.

38

Xylem tubes...

Take water up.

39

Light intensity...

The brighter the light, the greater the transpiration rate.
