Flashcards in B3: Heart, Lungs And Blood Structure Deck (14):
What do red blood cells do?
Contain haemoglobin that binds oxygen to transport it from lungs to tissues
What do white blood cells do?
Protect the body from pathogens and produce antibodies
What does plasma do?
Carries, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets around the body
What do alveoli do?
They have a large surface area and a large supply of blood capillaries so gases can diffuse in and out of the blood as efficiently as possible
What are capillaries?
They form a huge network of vessels linking arteries and veins allowing oxygen to diffuse easily out of your blood to your cells
What do valves do?
Ensure blood flow in the right direction
What do veins do?
Carries blood away from organs to the heart
What do arteries do?
Carries blood away from heart to organs
What do stents do?
Used to keep narrowed / blocked arteries open
What do statins do?
Reduce cholesterol levels in blood, reducing risk of coronary heart disease
What does the pulmonary artery do?
Takes deoxygenated blood to lungs
What does the vena cava do?
Brings deoxygenated blood to the heart
What does the pulmonary veins do?
Bring oxygenated blood from lungs to heart
