Flashcards in B7 - Ecology Deck (15):
1

Habitat

The place where an organism lives

2

Population

All the organisms of one species living in a habitat

3

Community

The population of different species living in a habitat

4

Abiotic factors

non-living factors of the environment e.g. temperature

5

Biotic factors

living factors of the environment e.g. food

6

Ecosystem

the interaction of a community of living organisms with the non-living parts of their environment

7

Abiotic factors examples

moisture level
light intensity
temperature
carbon dioxide level
wind intensity and direction
Oxygen level
Soil pH and mineral conent

8

Biotic factors examples

New predators arriving
Competition
New pathogens
Availability of food

9

Structural adaptations

Features of an organism's body structure - such as shape or colour
E.G. White fur to camouflage themselves in the snow

10

Behavioral adaptations

Ways that organisms behave. Many species migrate to warmer climates during the winter to avoid the problems of living in cold conditions

11

Functional adaptions

These are things that go on inside an organism's body that can be related to processes like reproduction and metabolism
E.G. Desert animals conserve water by producing very little sweat and small amounts of concentrated urine.

12

Microorganisms adaptations

They can live in a wide range of environments

13

Mean of quadrats

Total number of organisms / Number of quadrats

14

Water cycle

- Evaporation from sea/Transpiration from plants
- Condensation to form clouds
- Precipitation - water from the clouds
From land some of it goes back into the sea and the process starts again

15

Water cycle benefiting plants and animals

- some water is absorbed by the soil. This provides fresh water for things like photosynthesis
.- Some water taken up by the plants becomes apart of the plants' tissues and is passed along to animals in the food chain
