Back, Nerves and Vessels Flashcards
(38 cards)
What canal does the spinal cord lie in?
Vertebral
What is the difference between vertebral and intervertebral?
Vertebral is the centre of the body and the intervertebral is where the spinal nerves come out.
Where does the spinal cord end (adults and children)?
Conus medullaris
L1 in adults, L3 in children.
What do lumbar and sacral nerves form?
Cauda equina
How many layers in the spinal cord covered by?
3 layers of membrane.
What does the pia extend to attach to as?
Coccyx as filum terminale.
What is between the arachnoid and pia mater?
Subarachnoid space filled with CSF.
What are the 3 meninges?
Dura
Arachnoid
Pia
What is the space between the dura and arachnoid?
Subdural space.
Where are lumbar punctures done?
L3/4 or L4/S
Where do the dural and arachnoid extend to ?
S3 vertebra, the dural sac.
Why are there cervical and lumbar enlargements?
For brachial and lumbar plexus nerves.
What is pia matter not!?
A nerve
Where do you see autonomic nerves from?
Lateral horn
What are the 2 types of autonomic pathways?
Sympathetic
Parasympathetic
Where does sympathetic nerves go?
T1-L2
Where does parasympathetic nerves go?
S2-S4
What does sympathetic have to do before it gets to the mixed spinal nerve?
Synapse at a ganglion
What does the lateral horn contain?
Contains the cell bodies of the sympathetic neuron.
Where do the paravertebral ganglia lie to the vertebrae?
Parallel
Sympathetic chain
Where does the sympathetic nerve come out and go in the spinal nerve?
Out white
In grey
Where do paravertebral sympathetic ganglia lie?
C1-Coccygeal
What makes white matter white?
Myelination
What are the 3 options available to the sympathetic fibres?
Synapse at level of entry
Run up/down chain and synapse
Pass straight through and synapse in a prevertebral ganglion.
