Bacte Lec: Yersinia Flashcards
(32 cards)
How many species of Yersinia?
Seven species of Yersinia
is important cause of animal disease.
Y. pseudotuberculosis
Cause of plague-like disease in guinea pigs, sometimes rats and occasionally other rodents, rare infections in other animals.
YERSINIA PSEUDOTUBERCULOSIS
Pleomorphic, varies from coccoid to bacilli 5 um or more long
YERSINIA PSEUDOTUBERCULOSIS
T/F: Y. pseudotuberculosis is sometimes bipolar stained?
True
Colony description of Y. pseudotuberculosis
Colonies non-hemolytic, 0.1 to 1.0 mm, translucent and granular
Optimum growth temperature Y. pseudotuberculosis
28 C
T/F: Y. pseudotuberculosis does not ferment glucose
False: Ferments glucose and some other carbohydrates but produces little or no gas.
Y. pseudotuberculosis produces urease?
Does not produce urease.
Important virulence factor of Y. pseudotuberculosis
F1 - enveloped antigen
F1 antigen is composed of?
composed of protein and carbohydrates
T/F: Plasmid encoded X and B antigens, also found in Y. pseudotuberculosis and Y. pestis
False: Plasmid encoded V and W antigens, also found in Y. pseudotuberculosis and Y. pestis
Y. pseudotuberculosis usually found in?
In rodents, birds and soil
Usually infects cattle with pneumonia and abortion in cats.
Y. pseudotuberculosis
T/F: Pseudotuberculosis common in captive birds
True
In guinea pigs:
1. Animals lose weight develop diarrhea and die in ____weeks
3-4 weeks
What part are swollen in Y. pseudotuberculosis in guinea pigs?
Mesenteric lymph nodes greatly swollen and caseous, nodular abscesses in Peyer’s patches, liver and spleen
What happens during incubation at 37 C in Y.pseudotuberculosis
Incubation at 37’C results in loss of plasmid-encoded V and W antigens and loss of invasive ability
What type of parasite is Y. pseudotuberculosis
Facultative intracellular parasite; cell-mediated immunity
Diagnosis of Y. pseudotuberculosis?
Differentiated from Y. pestis by urease test and ability to grow well in deoxycholate-citrate agar.
Antimicrobial Susceptibility
Sensitive to chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, sulfonamides and tetracycline
T/F: Y. pseudotuberculosis is common in humans?
False: Rare but severe, fatal infections, mesenteric adenitis or septicemia
Yersinia that is ubiquitous but isolated from humans and chinchillas with alimentary tract disturbances, from healthy cattle and swine and from meat, shellfish and ice cream
Yersinia enterolitica
Yersinia enterolitica heat-stable enterotoxin is produced at?
Heat-stable enterotoxin produced at 30’C
