Flashcards in Bacteria & Toxins Deck (21):
1

4 ways in which exotoxins can act

1. Tissue / cell degrading e.g. Staph aureus - toxic epidermal necrolysis (scalded skin syndrome) - loss of patches of skin.

2. Neurological pathway - e.g Botulinum - toxin at NMJ = flaccid paralysis

3. Cell signalling pathway disrupted - cholera and anthrax

4. Superantigens - Staph aureus and Strep pyogenes

2

Endotoxin, Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is in the cell wall of gram - or + bact?

Gram -
It is released when the bacteria dies - causes sepsis

3

A disease of mucus membranes, mouth & throat, white/grey membrane forms on back of throat - risk of asphyxiation

Diptheria - Corynebacterium diptheriae

4

Which bact causes Toxic epidermal necrolysis - painful cond large patches of necrotic epidermis slide off skin.

Staph aureus

5

Cause of gas gangrene, tissue necrosis & food poisoning

Clostridium perfringens

6

Often causes diarrhoea infection of post op patients in hosp wards / care homes

Clostridium difficile

7

Causes whooping cough

Bordetella pertussis

8

Causes scarlet fever

Strep pyogenes

9

An exotoxin prod by E coli that inhibits protein synthesis

Shiga like toxin

10

An exotoxin prod by E coli that increases cAMP

Enterotoxin LT

11

An exotoxin prod by E coli that increases cGMP

Enterotoxin ST

12

This layer protects bact from phagocytosis and helps bact stick to surfaces / each other

Slime layer - glycocalyx

13

Thick walled spore helps bact eg Clostridium & Bacillus to survive heat and cold

Endospore

14

This bacteria is transmitted by lice, ticks, mites etc. Causes Typhus (not Typhoid!)

Rickettsia

15

A spirochaete that causes syphillis (after a stage show?...)

Treponema pallidum

16

Spirochaete causes lyme disease

Borrelia burgdorferi

17

Symptoms of Typhus

Systemically unwell, fever, photophobia back pain

18

Causes the plague - transmitted by flea bite

Yersinia

19

Infection of burns & wounds

Pseudomonas

20

Erodes tooth - dental caries

Strep mutans (& lactobacillus and Actinomyces)

21

Cause of peritonitis following abdo surgery

Bacteroides
