Flashcards in Bio Bases of Behavior: Endocrine Disorders Deck (24):
1

Fx of the Pituitary

Master endocrine gland b/c it releases hormones that activate other glands

2

Hypopituitarism

Undersecretion of pit hormones
Children- dwarfism, pubertal delay
Adults: Gonadal failure (impotence, infertility) & many other endocrine related disorders

3

Hyperpituitarism

Oversecretion of pit hormones, leading to skeletal overgrowth (acromegaly, gigantism)

4

Fx of the Thyroid Gland

Controls metabolism through secretion of thyroxin

5

Hyperthyroidism

Excessive secretion of thyroxin
Weight loss despite inc appetite, heat sensitivity, sweating, diarrhea, tremor, palpitations, fatigue, agitated depression, insomnia, impaired memory/judgment, halluc/delusions

6

Graves Disease

Most common form of hyperthyroidism

7

Hypothyroidism

Undersecretion of thyroxin
Weight gain, sluggish, fatigue, impaired memory/intellectual fxing, sensitivity to cold

8

Myxedematous symptoms

Progression of hypothyroidism charac by dry skin, puffiness, sparse hair, dec cardiac outpt)

9

parathyroid gland

Secretes calcitonin, plays role in calcium retention

10

Hyperparathyroidism

Hypercalcemia resulting in delirium, depression, apathy, personality changes, psychosis, stupor or coma

11

Hypoparathyroidism

Produces neuromuscular sxs, from parathesias (tingling) to tetany (cramps, convulsions), personality changes, delirium

12

Pancreas

Involved in secretion of insulin

13

Undersecreting or non-secreting pancreas results in _____

Diabetes Mellitus

14

Type I Diabetes

Juvenile onset, more serious, insulin dependent

15

Type II Diabetes

Adult onset, Non Insulin Dependent

16

Adrenal Cortex

Secretes corticosteroids involved in use of energy, inhibition of antibody formation, & inflammation

17

Addison's Disease

undersecretion of corticosteroids/adrenal insufficiency; leading to:
Apathy
Weakness
Irritability
Depr
GI disturbance

18

Cushing's Disease

Oversecretion of corticosteroids; leading to:
Agitated depr
Irritability
Emotional lability
Diff w/memory
Possibly suicide
Adiposity (swelling) of face, neck, trunk

19

2 Adrenal Diseases

Addison's & Cushing's

20

Hypoglycemia

Abnormally low blood sugar
Nervous
Irritability
trembling, cold
fatigue
rapid heart rate
hunger
headache

21

Hyperglycemia

High blood sugar; common in diabetes
Thirst
Increased urination
Dehydration
Fatigue
Abdominal pain
Nausea
Loss of appetite

22

Idiopathic

term for when cause of disease is unknown

23

Iatrogenic

term for when illness or disease is contracted during course of medical tx for another illness

24

Nocebo

opposite of placebo; something that should be ineffective but causes sxs of ill health
