Bio Lab 1- Archea & Bacteria Flashcards
Extremophile
Thermophile: heat loving
Halophile: salt loving
Methanogens: produces methane
Acidophile: low pH
Archaebacteria
Domain archaea
Kingdom archaeabacteria
Most often extremophiles
BacteriA
Domain bacteria Kingdom bacteria Prokaryotes Metabolically diverse 3 main shapes Most abundant life on earth Been around 3.5 billion years Reproduce thru binary fission
Prokaryote characteristics
Few membrane bound organelles
Circular chromosomes
Before nucleus
Smaller because less complex
Bacterial shapes
Bacillus- rod
Coccus- spherical
Sprillium- spiral
Bacterial metabolism
Heterotrophic- gets energy from outside sources. Can be aerobic or inaerobic
Autotrophic- self producing - photosynthetic
Lithoautotrophic- gets energy from soil
Gram stain
Used to identify bacteria
Gram positive: thick outer peptidoglycan wall
Gram negative: outer membrane, then thinner peptidoglycan wall
Natural selection requirements
Variability in the species
Variability is inherited by future generations
Variability directly affects mortality
Note: change in allele frequency = evolution
