bio molecules carbohydrates Flashcards
(14 cards)
what is carbohydrates?
molecules made up of hydrogen carbon and oxygen and they are sugar units called saccharides
3 types of saccharides?
monosaccrides- join together with other monosaccharides and form glycosidic bonds formed in condensation reactions
dissaccharides
polyasccardies
how many carbons are in the monosaccharide glucose
6
its the main substrate for respiration
what product does 2 alpha glucose makes
maltose
what molecule does glucose and fructose make
sucrose
what molecule does does glucose and galactose cause
lactose
what are polysaccardies
two glucose units joined together
glycogen?
1-4 glycosidic bonds
1-6 glycosidic bonds
it has a large number of side chains and its large and compact thus maxisming the amount of energy it can store
amylose?
unbranched chains of glucose molecules joined by 1-4 glycosidic bonds and therefore coiled and very compact meaning it can store lots of energy
amylopectin?
branched and is made up 1-4 and 1-6 glycosidic bonds and with many side chains it can release energy quickly
cellulose?
cellulose is in cell walls and is composed of upside beta glucose joined with glycodic bonds
microfibrils are joined together by cellulose chains and hydrogen bonds and they provide structural support in plant cells
hexose v pentose
hexose has 6 carbon chains
pentose has 5 carbon chains
