Biological Approach Flashcards
(16 cards)
Biological Approach Assumptions
- Behaviour is determined by biological structures such as genes and the brain and biological chemicals such as neurotransmitters and hormones
- Everything psychological is at first biological
Monozygotic Twins
Share 100% of their genes
Dizygotic Twins
Share 50% of their genes
(Non Identical Twins)
Genes
Sections of DNA that carry instructions for physical and psychological characteristics
Role of Genes in Behaviour
Genes influence psychological traits like intelligence, aggression, and mental disorders.
Behaviour is believed to result from the interaction between genes (nature) and environment (nurture).
Genotype
A persons actual genetic makeup. Its the particular set of genes that a person possesses.
Phenotype
Is the way that genes are expressed through physical, behavioural and psychological characteristics.
Concordance rates
Refers to the probability that two individuals share a certain behavioural trait.
What is one real life example of the biological approach?
Research into biochemical processes in the brain has led to the development of psychoactive drugs that treat serious illnesses like depression. These drugs have revolutionised the treatment of mental illness for many. This means that many people suffering from mental illness can now have a normal life.
What Does it Mean by the Genetic Basis of Behaviour?
Is the idea that certain behaviours, traits, and psychological characteristics such as intelligence and aggression are at least partly influenced by genes- inherited from our biological parents
Evolution
Refers to change in inherited characteristics over generations known as adaptions
Natural Selections
Any genetically determined behaviour which increases a species survival will be passes down to future generations.
Evolutionary Advantage
A trait that improves the chance of passing on genes
Adaptive Behaviour
Behaviour that helps an organism survive/reproduce
What characteristics do biological and psychologists believe are adaptive?
intelligence and aggression
Evolution Applied to Human Behaviour
Psychologists believe some human behaviours evolved because they were advantageous for survival or reproduction for example:
- Attachment and Social Releasers
