Biological Area Flashcards
Application
Giving advice to people with brain damage
Using drugs to alter undesirable behaviour
Psychosurgery
Defining principle 1
Behaviour can be largely explained in terms of biology; what is psychological is always biological first
Defining principle 2
Psychology should study the brain, nervous system and various biological systems in an attempt to explain behaviour
Defining principle 3
Psychology should be seen as a science, to be studied in a scientific manner, measuring variables objectively, for example using physiological measures such as MRI scans
Strengths
Scientific in approach using objective measures such as brain scans
By being reductionist thee biological area often results in good application such as treatments for a range of conditions
Weaknesses
Reductionist as it focuses on the nature side of the nature-nurture debate
Lab based, scientific research jeopardises the ecological validity of the research within the biological area
Define “brain plasticity”
The brains ability to recognise new neural pathways throughout life, based on new knowledge and experience
Define “primary visual cortex”
processes visual info
Define “Monocular vision”
one eye being used
Define “Binocular vision”
two eyes being used
Define “neurophysiology”
Physiology of the nervous system
