Flashcards in Biology Deck (17):
What are some differences between a plant cell and an animal cell?
-Plant cells have chloroplasts, larger vacuoles, and a cell wall
-They both have a mitochondria, nucleus, and a cytoplasm. Etc
-Animal cells have a cell membrane, they are motile, and have lysosomes
What are the two organ systems in plants?
1. Root System
- Draws water/minerals
- Below ground
2. Shoot System
—swollen stem-stores food
Explain the order from atoms to organisms
Define cellular respiration
Breakdown of glucose to make chemical energy—
3 types of passive transport?
-move from high to low
- with concentration gradient
-diffusion in a liquid
3. Facilitated diffusion
Explain active transport
-requires energy (ATP)
-against concentration gradient
Growth response to gravity
Pores that allow gasses to pass through the leaf epidermis
-stomata controls it
-loss of water through leaves from evaporation
Who disapproved spontaneous generation? How?
-Louis Pasteur and Francesco Reid
-Open/close flask—mood/no mood
-open/closed/cloth jar—maggots/no maggots
What does the xylem do?
Conducts water from roots to leaves
What is the cell theory?
1. All living things are made up of 1 or more cells
2.smallest unit of life
3. Must come from pre-existing life
What does the phloem do?
Conducts food from leaves to rest of plant
What are the 3 types of tissue of tissue in a plant
-cuticle and epidermis
-bulk of the leaf
-storage and photosynthesis
-Xylem and Phloem
Explain spontaneous generation
Theory that life could emerge spontaneously from non-living matter
3 types of osmosis
