Blood Flashcards
(43 cards)
What does haemoglobin do?
Absorbs oxygen
Does a red blood cell have a Nucleus?
No.
What is the feature of a bio concave disk?
allows more area for oxygen to be absorbed
Name 4 thing that plasma does do?
Carries oxygen from lungs to cell
carbon dioxide from cells to lungs
Digested food from small intestine to live then cells
Urea from liver to kidney
What is Plasmas job?
transports medium essentials around the blood
Name the features of an artery?
high pressure, no valves, pumps blood away from the heart, carries oxygenated blood, strong muscle to pump blood around the body
Name the features of a vein?
low pressure, has valves, brings blood to the heart, carries deoxygenated blood, smaller lumen and muscle than the artery
Name features of a capillary
where gas exchange occurs, low blood pressure, found in muscles and lungs
what happens when circulation goes wrong?
fat blocks up or clots in circulatory system. The artery becomes narrow which prevents enough oxygen to be delivered.
Advantages of a artificial heart
Heart prone from blood clotting, save someone’s life
Disadvantages of a artificial heart
Only meant to last for a certain amount of time, batteries eventually run out
Symptoms of a faulty valve
heart murmur, chest pains
what is the job of artificial heart valves?
used to unstiffen and fix leaky valves
what types of stents are there?
Biological and mechanical
The good parts and bad parts of biological valves?
do not damage red blood cells but can stiffen over several years
The good parts and bad parts of mechanical valves?
they are durable and don’t stiffen but damage red blood cells
What is a stent?
It is an artificial tube that treat narrow and weak arteries also can be used to improve blood flow
Benefits of a stent?
You do not need major surgery, major complications are uncommon, can save someone’s life, can improve functioning kidneys
Risks of stent?
can be allergic to the stent
side effects of medication
You can get stent thrombosis
scar tissue can grow within
What is the septum?
The central wall of the heart
What does the Aorta vein do?
carries oxygenated blood around the body
what does the vena cava do?
carries the deoxygenated blood back to the heart
What does the pulmonary artery do?
takes the blood to the lungs
What does the pulmenary vein do?
brings the oxygenated blood to the heart
