BLOOD TESTS # 5 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a hematocrit
Measures % of RBC per volume of blood
Normal values in hematocrit
Normal values: 37-48% (females)
40-52% (males)
Names for low and High RBC
Low value of RBC could indicate anemia
High value of RBC could indicate polycythemia
WHat is a blood smear?
Done as a part of a CBC
WBC differential is used to calculate % of EACH type of WBC (lymphocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils)
Count 100 WBC on the slide and keep a tally of each type
Normal Differential Counts
(WBC)
Neutrophils 50-70%
Eosinophil 1-3%
Basophil 0-1%
Lymphocyte 25-35%
Macrophage 4-6%
How does seeing WBC count help you identify an infection?
Certain types of WBC increase after certain infections. E.g. lymphocytes increase after certain viral infections and eosinophil’s with certain parasites.
Shapes of cells are also looked at. Can be used to diagnose sickle cell anemia
Normal WBC COunt & abnormal
5000-10000
below 5000 indicate leukopenia and high counts are called leukocytosis.
Leukopenia can be caused by…
spleen or liver damage or certain drugs
Leukocytosis can be caused by…
infectious disease, inflammatory disease (allergies, rheumatoid arthritis), leukemia
What is the normal RBC count?
4-6 million
HEMOCYTOMETER LAB PROTOCAL
Cells that touch LEFT or TOP line are COUNTED
Cells that touch RIGHT or BOTTOM line are NOT counted
