Describe the acute management of fracture

A
  • Stop any bleeding
  • Immobilise the injured area
  • Apply ice packs to limit swelling and relieve pain
  • Treat for shock (elevate the feet!)

What is a splint?

A

A supportive device used to keep in place any suspected fracture in one’s arm or leg

What are the functions of the splint?

A
  • Provide pain relief of the fractured limb
  • Support bone ends of the fracture site
  • Facilitate safe and seamless casualty transport

What are the two types of splints and what are they used for?

  • FLEXIBLE used for foot, ankle and joint fractures
  • RIGID used for fractured arm or leg

What is a Medical sling?

A

A piece of cloth used to immobilise the fractured am to the rigid splint in 90 degrees elbow flexion

A
  • Pressing on the fractured painful and deformed site
  • Push ends back in place (causes inflammation and acute bleeding)
